SDGs N STEAM: Designing a Classroom Toolkit

Objective:

To design a set of educational cards that creatively illustrate how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) connect to the STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). These cards will serve as part of toolkit to educate students about real-world applications of STEAM in achieving the SDGs.

Instructions:

Work in groups (3-5 students).

Each group should select one SDG to focus on and then each member should choose a STEAM discipline to connect to the chosen SDG (e.g., Science for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation).

Designing the Cards:

Each card should feature one SDG and cover its connections to all five STEAM disciplines. The goal is for each card to be displayed in the classroom for reference during the school year. Consider including the following:

  • SDG name and number.

  • Visual representation (e.g., drawing, graphic design, or collage).

  • Brief explanation of the SDG.

  • How each STEAM discipline addresses this SDG.

Example Layout for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. SDG name and number. Visual image. Using STEAM to learn about SDG 6:

Science: Water purification research.

Technology: App for water quality monitoring.

Engineering: Rainwater harvesting system design.

Arts: Awareness poster on water scarcity.

Mathematics: Modeling water usage patterns.

Present and Share:

Prepare a brief (2–3 minute) presentation explaining your cards and the SDG they represent.

Materials:

Art supplies: paper, markers, colored pencils.

Digital tools: Canva or Google Slides.

Use the sample cards provided below to provide ideas for your cards.
